“AI Powered Precision Machining”

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) transforms manufacturing by adeptly managing large and complex datasets, holding immense potential to improve various machining processes. This talk provides a brief review of AI’s applications in precision machining and reports on our recent study of using machine learning to analyze extensive datasets obtained from the grinding of GaAs, SiO2, and Si brittle crystals and predict machining outcomes. Incorporating grinding conditions, ground surface images, and workpiece’s mechanical properties, both non-deep and image-based deep learning models predicted roughness and grinding forces with high accuracy. Other case studies for demonstrating AI’s potential in machining applications include milling and polishing parameter optimization and performance enhancement, as well as tool wear monitoring. The integration of AI into precision machining promises substantial improvements in adaptive in-process monitoring, control, and optimization of operations, potentially revolutionizing machining practices.

Abstract: Shibaura Machine manufactures large machine tools and ultra-precision machine tools. These require a number of manufacturing methods that are difficult to achieve with ordinary machine tools, and we meet our customers' demands by combining our years of accumulated expertise with cutting-edge technology. In this presentation, I would like to focus on ultra-precision machining tools and introduce our efforts to meet customer demands.
